NIE Registration - Spanish Tax Identification Number

Anyone making a large purchase, such as a house or vehicle, registering inheritance, importing a vehicle, or in receipt of a work contract will require an NIE number.

In days gone by, an NIE number was extremely easy to obtain and no evidence of the need for it was required. 

Today their issue is strictly controlled and in Almeria the applicant must take along the proof of the reason for the NIE registration. This could be the reserve contract for the property purchase, invoice from the garage for the vehicle purchase, death certificate and Will for inheritance etc.

The applicant is required to go, by appointment, to the Oficina de Extranjeria (Immigration Office) or National Police Station if this is the only option. In Almería this is a 2 visit process - first to hand in all the documents and then a return visit to collect the certificate.
