Vehicle Change of Ownership

If you are buying a second-hand car privately, it is necessary to inform Trafico and pay the relevant taxes and fees. It is always wise to do a background check on the vehicle to ensure it has not got any debts or other issues.

Officially, it is the buyer's responsibility to pay and action the transfer but many sellers feel it is important to be involved to ensure the transfer is carried out so they do not incur problems in the future if the transfer is not carried out.

The documents required include the passport and residencia/NIE/TIE/DNI of the seller, the same for the buyer as well as an up-to-date Padron certificate (for residents only - please talk to us about your circumstances if non-resident.

The cost of the transfer can be calculated easily with a copy of the vehicle documents.

Importing a Vehicle from an EU Country

This is a fairly straight-forward procedure so long as the person bringing the vehicle into Spain is the owner of the vehicle according to the paperwork.

As well as the usual fees, there is also an emissions tax to pay, which is calculated based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle, as recorded on the vehicle paperwork.

Importing a Vehicle from a Non-EU Country

This is a much more complex procedure and in many cases will involve import duty as well as emissions tax, unless it is being brought into the country as part of the moving process. In the latter case there are a strict set of guidelines to meet. Import duty is currently 21% of the vehicle value and once other Custom and agency fees are included it works out to about 30%.

Change of address

It is always necessary to present an up-to-date Padron certificate when registering the change of address of a vehicle. Some Town Halls are able to do this but they are few so it needs to be done in the Trafico office that is associated with your town.

Exporting the Vehicle

It is very important to deregister a vehicle from the Spanish system if it is going to leave the country on a permanent basis. If this is not done the annual road tax continues to accrue and if unpaid will also incur fines and interest.

Other Procedures

This includes temporary green plates, classic car registration and  HGV taco cards.

Driving Licences and Vehicles in Spain

Moving to Spain can be an exciting prospect for many and for those who are citizens of an EU country the process is fairly straight-forward.

For non-EU countries, including the UK, the process is not so easy, but it is acheivable.

If you have the resources and follow the requirements we can help you achieve your dream.
