 S1, E121 or D1 Registration

If you qualify for an S1, E121 or D1 from your home country, we can help you register it at the Social Security and then the Health Service in order to obtain health cover.

A pensioner who qualifies for an S1 can also apply for one for their younger wife or husband (as dependant) so that they can also benefit from free health cover. However, it is very improtant to note that when the dependent  becomes a grown up and qualifies for their own S1 it MUST be registered so the dependancy stops. Failure to do this results in the loss of medical cover.

Remember we are here to help.

Temporary Health Cover with EHIC/GHIC

If you are not resident in Spain but hold an EHIC or GHIC card we can help you register temporarily with a local docto.r. For EU citizens, this can be for up to one year if the card is still valid. For UK citizens, this will be for a maximum of 90 days as per the time permitted to stay in the EU.

Convenio Especial

For those residents who are too young to qualify for S1 health cover there is the option to register on the Convenio Especial, which is a pay in scheme into the national health service, which allows you to visit the local doctor and hospital.

The main requirement is to show you have been on the Padron for at least one year and can prove that you have been living here through bank statements and utility bills.

This scheme, like private medical cover, does not include discount on medication however, it does not take into account any pre-existing medical conditions so, a good option for some who find it difficult to obtain private insurance.

Private Healthcover

There are several companies who offer private health insurance and It is always a good idea to discuss your requirements with more than one compan.y.

If you have pre-existing health conditions it may not be so easy or very costly to obtain this type of cover but for young retirees this is the only option, especially for those seeking residencia or a visa in Spain.

We can give you advise on companies that have reasonable costs and doctors/hospital facilities in the area.

Please make a selection from the menu above for information on some of the ways we can help you with any health issues.

Healthcare in Spain

Healthcare in Spain is important for everyone, whether it is temporary, permanent or private.

Most EU & UK state pensioners qualify for an S1 or E121, which enable them to register in the Spanish healthcare system.

Young retirees can obtain healthcare through private insurance or the Convenio Especial.

Visitors and holidaymakers can use their EHIC or GHIC cards.
