We can help with all licence applications.

For UK citizens, who are on holiday, it is perfectly acceptable to drive on a UK licence for the duration of your stay, which cannot exceed 90 days at a time.

For UK citizens, who have obtained Residencia in Spain, as of 16th March 2023 there is a 6 month grace period for those who have already exceeded the permitted 6 months to make arrangements to exchange their licence for a Spanish EU one. If the UK licence has expired, so long as the residencia was obtained before the licence expiry date the licence can still be exchanged.

For EU citizens and other countries who have already agreed a convenio to exchange the process is fairly straight-forward.

Exchange an EU Driving Licences

If you have an EU driving licence from another country and have obtained Residencia in Spain then it is necessary to exchange your licence within 6 months for a Spanish one.

It involves an appointment with the local DGT administration office or employing the services of a business who can do this on your behalf. We are one of those businesses who can deal with the DGT and help make the process less stressful.

International Driving Licence

For some countries you may visit, it will be necessary to obtain an International licence. This is processed by the DGT office and the licence is valid for a period of 1 year.It should be applied for well in advance so the document is ready without causing delay or concern.

Change of address

It is important to notify the DGT about your change of address. For driving licences, a postal address is recorded so that they can communicate with you regarding fines or other licence/vehicle issues.

So if you move locally and your postal address will not change (as recorded with DGT) there is no need to take any action. If your postal address has changed then action is required.

For information regarding vehicles, this is always required and so please refer to the relevant section in the 'Vehicles' page.

Spanish Licence Renewal

Once you are in the Spanish system, the method of renewal is very straight-forward. It simply involves a visit to the private medical centre in your area that carries out the test. This is usually recommended one month before expiry andby appointment. The new licence will arrive in the post, so if you have changed your postal address they will need to be advised.

Please make a selection from the menu above for information about the different options available in relation to procedures in Spain to exchange driving licences and import vehicles and so much more.
